In 2001 the Compass Center’s main shelter and service facility in Pioneer Square was severely damaged by the Nisqually earthquake. The upper floors of this 100-year-old, un-reinforced masonry building were red-tagged while the basement hygiene center was permitted to remain open under conditional status. It took four years to complete the massive renovation and new construction of an adjacent building that would restore this facility to full functioning. The completed project consisted of the historic renovation of the original facility, which now provides 21 units of permanent rental housing studios with common laundry and computer areas for each floor, a Client Service Office providing free mail and banking services for homeless and low-income people and a hygiene center for homeless adults to shower and do laundry. The project also includes new construction of an adjacent wing that provides 88 units of transitional housing ‘carrels’, a commercial kitchen and dining area, program service space and administrative offices above a below-grade parking garage.
